In 2023, the rate of suicide deaths in Tillamook County was 2.6 times higher than that of the state of Oregon.
“Approximately 135 people are impacted by each suicide death,” Tillamook County Suicide Prevention Coalition Chair Amanda Ferrat said. “But in a rural community like ours, that impact far surpasses that number. It goes past that immediate family and that ripple effect is a lot bigger than most people understand or know.”
Tillamook County recognizes suicide as public health concern that can affect community members of all ages and backgrounds, and proclaims September as “National Suicide Prevention Month."
“We want to increase awareness, but move to action as well,” Ferrat said. “The Tillamook County Suicide Prevention Coalition is a community-based organization with volunteers representing numerous organizations. We believe that everyone can be a part of suicide prevention.”
Throughout the month of September, the Coalition will be a participating in numerous suicide prevention and awareness events.
“We’re working to destigmatize the conversation that we recognize is not always comfortable,” Ferrat said. “But the more we talk about it, the more likely someone is to reach out or ask for help.”
On Saturday, September 6 the Coalition will be present at the Tillamook Farmer’s Market to give out: “Don’t Give Up” yard signs. Community members are encouraged to stop by and pick up their free sign or reach out to the Coalition by emailing: tcspcinfo@gmail.com to coordinate pick up.
World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10, and the Collation is encouraging the community to wear teal and purple, post a photo on social media, and tag the Coalition with the hashtag: starttheconversationtillamook.
A Suicide Prevention and Self-Care event hosted by Tillamook Family Counseling Center and SOS Tillamook will take place that evening at the Tillamook Main Library Branch from 5:30 – 8:30 pm.
The first hour of the event will focus on QPR training. QPR stands for: “Question, Persuade, Refer.” QPR is a suicide prevention training that helps participants recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to help a person in crisis.
“QPR teaches people the warning signs of what to look for, ways to ask the question without judgement, and references to get someone some sort of support services,” Ferrat said. “It’s a pretty simple introduction to prevention training and I would love if everyone in our county was trained in it, could recognize warning sings, and could ask those hard questions.”
QPR trainings are also available for organizations or larger groups upon request.
Following the training, a self-care workshop of crafts and socializing will take place. Participants are invited to attend one or both sessions of the evening.
Concluding the day, join the Coalition at the Maxwell Library Park to light a candle to honor those who are suicide attempt and suicide loss survivors from 7:45 – 8:15 pm.
Want to support or be involved with the Coalition? “Hope with the Community” will be a lunch and open house to meet and mingle with folks, learn about how the Coalition is supporting the community in suicide prevention, and explore the ways to get involved. The event is slated for September 18, from 11 am – 1 pm at the Tillamook Main Library Branch.
Tillamook County Suicide Prevention Coalition currently has a display case at the Tillamook Main Library Branch with information, a QR code to their website, and additional resources.
